My whole life I have had thin, flat hair. I swear, I look bald if I have my hair in a low ponytail. I have tried tons of products that claim to give you lots of volume, but nothing ever worked. Until recently, I thought that a couple hair products really could be the solution to my flat hair. I thought that I just had not found the right products yet. However, that is just not the case. I discovered that it is a series of different products, processes, and practices that give flat and thin hair volume. Now, I know this sounds overwhelming, but it really is not that bad! Especially for us flat-haired ladies to finally have volume and body, it was a change that I was HAPPY to make. This is how to give volume to flat, thin hair.

THE FIRST STEP
The first thing that needs to happen for flat hair to have volume is to purge your hair of split ends. Not only does cutting off the split ends of your hair make your hair look healthier, its also lighter. When I lightened my hair it made my ends especially unhealthy and gave me lots of split ends. Even in this picture, you can see the split ends and it does NOT look good.
See what I mean? You can literally see where the healthy hair ends and the unhealthy hair begins. When I cut all of my split ends off, my hair was lighter. There was not as much weight on the roots of my hair, so that definitely gave my hair more volume.
THE SECOND STEP
The second thing that you need is right shampoo and conditioner. This is a huge part of going from flat hair to voluminous hair. Until recently, I was just using whatever shampoo made my hair feel soft. I mostly used Dove or Pantene shampoo and conditioner. Look, I know all the horrible things that can happen to your hair from not using quality products. I purchased the Ouay Fine Hair Shampoo and Conditioner from Sephora and it completely transformed my hair. Before my hair was fine and so soft it just was FLAT. I know it sounds like good thing to have soft hair, but my hair was so soft that when I would tease it, the tease would just fall out. Now my hair is soft, but better! My hair is soft to the touch, but now I can tease it and it finally has some TEXTURE so it can have volume. It’s like trying to tie silk ribbon in a knot. It is too soft to really hold a tight knot. As you can see, cutting off my split ends and using this shampoo and conditioner have made a huge difference. In both pictures, my hair only air dried overnight. In the picture on the right my hair has more volume overall and looks healthier. Plus the shampoo and conditioner smells amazing and the smell lasts until you wash it again. I have never had a shampoo and conditioner that had a scent that lasted so long. Click the photos below to shop the fine hair shampoo and conditioner.
THE THIRD STEP
The third step in getting thin, fine hair to have body and volume is to use the right styling products. I discovered the Navy Hair Care Pebble Beach Dry Texture Spray and I love it. It gives my hair so much volume and gives it texture so I can tease it and this product also acts as hairspray to hold curls. This means you only have to use one product after styling your hair! Like I said, it seems like a lot, but when you get down to it, you are just replacing the products you already use. You are replacing the products and tools and processes for ones that ACTUALLY WORK! I encourage you to take photos before you start any of these processes and then after to really see the difference. Send them to me as well! I would love to see the difference.
