As I am sure y’all know, I love home decor and furniture. Plain and simple. I’m sure Ian rolls his eyes when I get a new package from amazon and it’s another home item. I open the box and march right upstairs to grab my drill. (I have my own because he thinks I don’t know how to use a drill properly). In reality, there is nothing I cannot hang up if I am motivated. The truth of the matter is I have expensive taste. Unfortunately, so does Ian. We love the way that an item looks or performs, we look at the price and OH MY. It is expensive. Because of this, I have gotten pretty good at getting the expensive look and function, but without the big price-tag. Ian isn’t nearly as good at this as I am. I have collected my knowledge to inform you on what no one told you about getting home decor and furniture for less.

Don't Follow The Rules
This is the best piece of advice I could give when it comes to saving money. “Don’t follow the rules” can mean a couple things. The first part of this advice that I would like to address is really regarding design. When I was first playing with interior design, I felt myself trying to make my spaces look like someone else’s home. All of the beautiful farmhouse photos on Pinterest caused me to want to force my space to be something it is not. Even though I bought lots and lots of furniture and decor, I was never happy with how my home looked. You save so much money by choosing the right decor and furniture the first time. Instead of buying a million signs from Hobby Lobby like I did, find unique pieces. Architectural decor is the best in my opinion because it creates so much visual interest and they don’t feel too forced. Also adding some greenery, alive or fake, adds a pop of color without it being too overwhelming. Here are some great examples of Architectural pieces and greenery.
Don't Follow The Rules Part 2
The second part of “don’t follow the rules” is really to just think outside the box and be creative. The best way to save money is to use furniture and decor for something other than their intended purpose. For example, in front of the large window in my living room, I wanted a bench. Realistically, I needed more storage in my living room and figured that a bench with storage would be ideal. The only problem is that the storage benches in my price range were not cute. And the ones that I liked were very expensive. I decided that I would just get a normal bench and put baskets underneath for storage. Upon looking at normal benches, the ones with the character and colors that I wanted were again more than I wanted to spend. Eventually I found an ottoman at Target that looked exactly like I wanted. I bought two ottomans and placed them in my living room with baskets that I found on clearance underneath. In the end, I did not use these ottomans as their intended purpose, but as visual interest and extra seating and storage.
Window Treatments On A Budget
One thing in my home that I always get compliments on are my window treatments. Would you believe me if I told you I spent less than $15 on each curtain? I wanted curtains that were long enough to lay on the floor. It looks luxurious and elongates the room – which is something I wanted. Typically, curtains that are 96 inches long are over $30 for only one curtain. I decided to use a twin size flat sheet, which is 66″ wide and 96″ long. Twin flat sheets are usually around $6 and I also purchased curtain clips to hold the sheet. I have not had the “curtain” slip out of the clips ever and I have had these up on the wall for over 7 months now. My dog steps on my curtains and they still do not fall. Overall, window treatments that would usually cost around $110 per window, only cost me about $65 and it looks great! You really cannot tell that I have a flat sheet hanging from my window.
Find A Great Sale
This one seems obvious, and in a way it is. What I would like to mention is that many people do not want to take the time to find a great sale on something they want to buy. Because of this, I would love to offer to find the sale for you! I have many resources to find sales that are usually overlooked. If you are wanting to buy something and want a discount, shoot me a message on Instagram or email me at amirrarobertsonblog@gmail.com and I will try to find a great sale for you! Just send me the link to the item(s) you would like to buy and just say something like “Will you find a sale for me?” I will send you a link back if I can find a sale!

Where To Find Low Prices
This photo shows a dresser that was originally $275 and I bought it for $81! Such a steal! It gave me a great amount of storage in the living room that I did not previously have. That means that it is easier to keep my home tidy and clean! I cannot link this exact dresser because it was a 60% off clearance sale and its not available online or elsewhere. I have linked some that are similiar!
I have seen a ton of listings on Amazon, Etsy, etc. for old books used as decoration. I bought al of my books at a thrift store. They’re usually $1 per book or less. The ones being sold elsewhere are usually 6 times that. Just grab a book from the shelf at your local Goodwill and remove the paper cover and voila! You have a neutral colored book for decoration and you payed way less than everyone else!
